The new STAM - Ghent City Museum - provides the perfect introduction to Ghent.

The historic splendour of the building that houses STAM becomes clear in the abbey’s church, refectory and cloisters. The abbey contains marvellous pre-Van Eyckian wall paintings in one of the most beautiful medieval refectories in Western Europe.

In the fourteenth-century abbey, STAM introduces visitors to the story of the city by means of a permanent circuit that relies heavily on high-tech multimedia applications. Temporary exhibitions and other projects are organised in the adjoining 17th-century monastery buildings.

Not only will you find the depository of the city’s memory there, you will also be able to take the pulse of the contemporary city and get a glimpse of the future. STAM then passes you on to the city itself, because that is the museum’s prize object.
